iOS 15

Well, the latest version of the iPhone and iPad operating system is here, and as usual my advice is – wait. By holding off until the first “point release” (i.e. iOS 15.1), you will make sure that an early round of improvements and bug fixes will have occurred before trusting your phone or tablet to it.

It’s rather telling that there have already been two minor fixes rolled out for iOS 15, namely iOS 15.0.1 and 15.0.2. These, however, have all the hallmarks of hastily applied fixes and don’t “count” as the point release we’re waiting for.

Rather than sporting a number of new flashy “must have” features, iOS 15’s enhancements are spread throughout the operating system and are easy to miss. A pretty good guide can be found here. In my opinion, the most significant is “live text”, in which you can point your camera at a printed or hand written document and your iPhone will immediately convert it to edible text. Pretty snazzy.

I will update this space when iOS 15.1 is released; that will be the “all clear” for most users to upgrade.
